Second Step

 Second Step

In Black’s Mill Elementary School we provide our students with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) support with an evidence-based curriculum called Second Step. In the Second Step curriculum students are given instruction in their classroom setting about a variety of skills that will help them to succeed in school and life. Second Step SEL lessons are provided to all grades in a developmentally appropriate manner. Skills that students are taught in Second Step lessons include:

  • Skills for Learning
  • Empathy
  • Emotion Management
  • Problem Solving

Students also receive Second Step lessons about Bullying Prevention and Child Protection in a classroom setting. Bullying Prevention Lessons in Second Step provide students with information about: how to Recognize signs of bullying; how to Refuse bullying in an assertive and respectful voice; and how to Report bullying that is happening to them or to other students.

Lessons in the Second Step Child Protection curriculum provide students with information and skills about: ways to stay safe with Recognizing if something is safe and what the rules are, Reporting unsafe things to adults, and Refusing unsafe things by saying “no”; always asking an adult or person in charge if something is safe; they learn the difference between safe and unsafe touches; and rules for touching that help keep them safe.
