THIRD GRADE

Third grade is a big transition year for students. They go from being in K-2 to the upper elementary category of 3-5. They have to become more independent learners and have more responsibility for their learning. Students are learning test-taking skills as well as being prepared to take the Georgia Milestones Assessment (GMAS) in the spring.

We encourage parents to stay involved by looking at weekly papers in their child's Thursday Folders, reading weekly emailed newsletters from the teacher, communicating with their child's teacher, and helping their child be prepared for school each day. Your support and involvement is needed and appreciated. Together we can produce productive and successful students!

3rd Grade Curriculum Information

Reading/ELA:

Third graders are making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Third-grade students increase their abilities to read aloud with fluency and improve their reading comprehension. They read more thoughtfully, discover more details, extract deeper meaning in what they read, and read more complex texts. They enjoy a variety of genres, including fiction and non-fiction texts and poetry. Third graders work more independently on research projects, making their writing more sophisticated and meaningful. With some guidance, they use all aspects of the writing process in producing their own compositions and reports.

Third graders will learn and apply conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, and mechanics to aid the comprehension and analysis of texts and to communicate clearly and precisely in written and spoken language. They will engage in a wide range of written and spoken activities during which they expand and deepen their vocabularies, build word analysis skill sets (morphology), and determine or clarify the meanings of words and phrases. Third graders will also observe, analyze, and use the structures and conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, and mechanics as they interpret and construct texts.

Math:

The following units will be taught in third grade math: Place Value and Rounding, Addition and Subtraction, Area, Multiplication and Division, Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication/Division Word Problems, Perimeter, Describing and Comparing Fractions, Length and Time, Liquid Volume and Mass, Graphing, Geometry. Third graders will learn how to display perseverance and patience in problem-solving. They will also learn how to demonstrate skills and strategies needed to succeed in mathematics, including critical thinking, reasoning, and effective collaboration and expression. Other areas they will work on is seeking help, applying feedback and setting and monitoring their math goals.

Science:

Hands-on, student-centered, and inquiry-based approaches are the emphasis of instruction in third grade science. We will study the following units in: heat energy, habitats of Georgia, rocks and minerals, fossils, and pollution and conservation.

Social Studies:

This year we will start out learning map skills to understand what we are studying. Your child will be learning all 50 states and where they are located. Then we will move on to learn about Native Americans, European Explorers, and Colonial America. The remaining units will be on government and economics.
